Official statistics of Sweden

Coherent statistics on various aspects of forest land in Sweden. The statistics are divided into five types of forest land - formally protected forest land, compensated areas under the Forestry Act, voluntary set-asides, consideration patches, and unproductive forest land. The information is produced in collaboration between the authorities Statistics Sweden, the Swedish Forest Agency, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the Swedish National Forest Inventory.

Productive forest land under formal protection amounted to 6.2 per cent in 2025

In 2025, just under 20,000 hectares of productive forest land were newly designated under formal protection, corresponding to 0.8 per mille of Sweden’s total area of productive forest land. The increase in 2025 was half as large as that recorded in 2024. Areas compensated under the Forestry Act increased by 4,000 hectares outside formally protected areas, corresponding to 0.2 per mille of the country’s total area of productive forest land.
