ESSnet Workshop, 31 May - 1 June in Stockholm

Welcome to the first ESSnet workshop for improving knowledge and exchanging information between ESSnet projects.

Statistics Sweden is proud to arrange the first ESSnet workshop together with Eurostat. The purpose of this meeting is to allow participants from National Statistical Institutes to present their respective needs and share their experiences in ESSnet projects.

Background

The idea of an ESSnet project is that a few ESS (European Statistical System) members, interested in a specific domain, would actively collaborate for its development and disseminate the results to those not participating. The actions supported by the ESSnet shall serve the interests of the whole ESS while keeping in line with the 5 year statistical programme.

ESSnet projects have been initially developed to cover methodological activities to be managed directly and merely by the ESS members. These should nevertheless be understood in the broad sense including, for example, the development of tools for a specific phase of statistical production; the drafting of guidelines; and the establishmentof standards.

This new form of cooperation is now very successful inside the ESS. In total, currently 18 ESSnet projects have been launched since the start of the exercise in 2006. They represent an amount of 6,508,473 € of community financing provided to 101 partners. Only 4 projects are finished up to now and 16 projects are forecasted to be started in 2010 and a minimum of 8 new projects for 2011.

Objectives

The main objective is to identify different ways to improve our work by finding out what is “Best practice” through discussions with Eurostat. With this meeting Eurostat wants to start a dialogue between existing and future ESSnets and to gather comments and proposals from involved stakeholders so that future ESSnet projects will hopefully develop more easily.

The meeting will be for one and a half days starting at 9.30 on Monday 31 May 2010. During these two days, between 9 - 15 ESSnet projects will be presented and followed up by discussions.

During the first session on Monday three projects will be presented regarding administrative and financial issues. Here, one of presentations will be the ESSnet project on SMDX. The other two will be determined by participant input. Presentations of ESSnet projects that focus on technical issues are planned to be held during the afternoon of the conference’s first day and morning of the second day.

Presentations

In order for the workshop to obtain the expected results, it is essential that delegates readily show the level of engagement needed to initiate and conduct a productive dialogue. We await your proposals for presentations that would fuel such a dialogue. In all we must have at least nine presentations but around fifteen is preferred.

Please report your interest in offering a presentation to Jukka Laurila at Statistics Sweden, no later than 14 May.

As a guideline for the presentations the following template could help:

Project oriented

  1. A brief explanation of objectives to be achieved.
  2. What are main achievements/results which prove the benefit of the ESSnet approach (or show the contrary)
  3. What are critical success/fail/hampering factors?
  4. What should be the next developments to be launched in the coming years in the project's area

ESSnet oriented

  1. What could contribute to improvement of the functioning of ESSnets
  2. Why is the ESSnet the proper organizational form to achieve the proposed objectives
  3. How the ESSnet concept can be developed further

Application

Last day for application is 21 May, but we recommend you to fill in the application form as soon as possible since the number of delegates is limited.

For Monday evening we have the pleasure to invite all delegates on a boat trip, with a three-course dinner, to see Stockholm’s very unique archipelago. This will also be a perfect moment for more informal discussions.
