Panel of students for longitudinal studies:

More than 10 per cent of grade 7 students participate in remedial education

In grade 7, spring 2006, about 14 per cent of the boys and 8 per cent of the girls participated in remedial education.

In the spring 2002, Statistics Sweden started the sixth longitudinal panel for student follow-ups. The survey is based on a sample of about 10 percent of the pupils in grade 3 and follow-up surveys are conducted through primary and lower secondary education until leaving grade 9. The follow-up in the spring 2006, when most of the students in this cohort were in grade 7, showed that 11 per cent participated in remedial education. Of the same cohort, 16 per cent had participated in remedial education in grade 3-5 and 13 per cent had remedial education in grade 6.

Similar surveys have been conducted every fifth year since 1981. The rate of participation in remedial education in grade 7 for the latest panel was about the same as for the two previous panels. However, the latest panel showed lower participation rates during grades 3-5 than earlier panels.

Participation rate in remedial education in grade 3-9

The error bars indicate the range of a 95 per cent confidence interval.

About 5 per cent of the pupils in panel 6 were born abroad. The rate of foreign born pupils participating in tuition in "Swedish as second language"  was 30 per cent and about 5 per cent had "Home language tuition" in grade 7.

Definitioner och förklaringar

Please note that the survey uses a sample from grade 3 also for later years. This means that data on foreign born pupils are not representative for all pupils in the later grades, as those who immigrated after grade 3 are not represented in the survey.
