Educational attainment of the population 2006:

Highest level of education in Stockholm region

Slightly under 40 municipalities, most commonly large city municipalities and county towns, have a larger share of highly educated people, with at least three years of post upper secondary school education, than the national average (21 percent). The majority of municipalities with the highest level of education are found in the county of Stockholm. In seven of these, 30 percent or more of the population are highly educated.

The high educational level in the Stockholm region can largely be explained by the labour market with many jobs in the industries “financial and business services”, “education and research” and “public administration”, which have a large share of highly educated people.

Newly immigrated people have high educational level
In general, the people who have immigrated in recent years have an educational level which is higher than both those who immigrated a longer time ago and the population as a whole. Among those immigrating in the period 2001–2006, 28 percent have a post upper secondary education of three years or more. A majority of the new immigrants are relatively young, which partly explains the high educational level. Slightly over half of the people (25–64 years) who immigrated to Sweden during the period 2001–2006 were in the age group 25–34 years. Data on education is missing for 25 percent of people who immigrated during this period, which means that the actual share of highly educated people is probably higher than that presented below.
