Press release from Statistics Sweden and Medlingsinstitutet

2007-10-01 9:30 AM Nr 2007:249

Short-term statistics, comparison of wages and salaries in the private and public sector. July 2007:

Pay increases of around three percent

The estimated average percentage changes in wages and salaries in the private sector for the last thirteen months were 2.9 percent for manual workers and 3.0 percent for non-manual workers. The corresponding average for the governmental sector was 3.5 percent. In the primary local authorities and the county councils, the corresponding averages were 1.7 percent and 2.3 precent respectively.

The result in the local authorities is affected by the fact that some of the new wage and salary agreements include a non-recurring amount which is not included in the short-term statistics and the increasing number of employees with unemployment subventions since 2006.

1)The percentage change in July 2006 is definitive. The percentage changes from August 2006 through June 2007 are preliminary and are constantly revised with respect to retroactive wage and salary payments. When comparing the different sectors, it is important to consider that wage and salary negotiations in the sectors are not conducted at the same time.

Facts about the survey

The average percentage changes above are calculated by adding the estimated changes for each month from July 2006 to July 2007, and then dividing the resulting figure by thirteen. This results in a moving average for each publishing month.
