Swedens population 2009:

Youngest first-time parents in Dorotea and Överkalix

Not since the beginning of the 1990s has fertility been as high as it is today. Still, fertility is under the reproduction level. The youngest first-time parents were found in Dorotea and Överkalix while the oldest were in Danderyd.

One way of measuring fertility is to calculate the total fertility rate. This is a measure of the number of children born in relation to the number of women in childbearing years. It describes the number of children a woman would give birth to on average, if the present fertility rate applied throughout her childbearing years. The total fertility rate in 2009 was 1.94 children per woman. This will not be sufficient for the population to increase on its own.. For this to happen, every woman would have to give birth to an average of 2.1 children during their lifetimes. This had not been the case since 1991 when the total fertility was 2.12.

Over time the average age for having a first child has increased, but in recent years the average age of first-time parents has been unchanged. First-time mothers had an average age of 29.0 among those who became first-time parents during 2005-2009, and fathers had an average age of 31.4. The youngest first-time mothers live in Dorotea and the youngest first-time fathers live in Överkalix while the oldest live in Danderyd.

Definitions and explanations

Total fertility states how many children women would have on average if a given year's fertility would apply for their entire childbearing years. If on average fewer than two children are born for each woman in a given population, then this leads after time to a population decrease. Likewise, should on average more than two children for each woman, then this naturally leads to a population increase. In actuality, it requires slightly more than two children for each woman to be born to reach full reproduction. How much more depends on mortality among the girls and how many more boys than girls are born. In Sweden, it takes 2.1 children for each woman in order for the population to fully reproduce.

The average life expectancy at birth indicates the average number of years remaining to live given that mortality remains at the same level in the future.
