Rents for rental apartments:

Rent increases higher within municipal housing

Rents increased an average of 2.4 percent from 2010 to 2011. The year before rents rose by 1.6 percent. A three-room apartment costs an average of SEK 5 781 per month.

Rents increased by 2.6 percent in municipal housing companies while private owners raised rents by 2.3 percent. Commonly, rents increase by the same amount between the two groups, or are somewhat larger for the private real estate owners. This is the first time since early 1990’s that rents increase more in apartments owned by municipal housing companies.

Stockholm more expensive than Gothenburg

The average increase in rent was lowest in Greater Gothenburg (2 percent) and highest (2.7 percent) in the group of other larger municipalities. In Greater Stockholm rents increased by 2.6 percent. This is the fourth year in a row that has had higher rent increases in Stockholm than Gothenburg.

Less expensive to live in a smaller municipality

The average monthly rent for an apartment with three rooms and a kitchen is SEK 5 781. Greater municipal areas have higher rents than the smaller municipalities. A person living in Stockholm pays around SEK 1000 more for a three room apartment than someone living in a municipality with less than 75 000 inhabitants.
