Areas of crops sown in autumn 2011:

Areas of autumn-sown cereals in Western Sweden halved due to rain

This autumn a total of 288 100 hectares of winter wheat was sown in all of Sweden. This is 19 percent less than last autumn. In Halland County and Västra Götaland County, barely half of the normal sowing of winter wheat was able to be done, and in Värmland County only one-fourth of the winter wheat areas were sown, compared to last year.

Large amounts of rain fell in August and September in Southwestern Sweden, when it was time to prepare the ground for the autumn sowing. This resulted in difficulties when the ground was to be prepared, and a significant number of the planned crop areas were not sown. The year's total of autumn-sown cereals and oilseed crops was 403 900 hectares. This is 17 percent less than last year and 18 percent less than the average of the past five years.

Areas for rye were halved in Västra Götaland County

This autumn 22 600 hectares of winter rye were sown, which is the about the same as last autumn. Compared to the five year average, this is a decrease of 17 percent. Only half of the rye areas that are normally cultivated were sown in Västra Götaland County.

Winter barley areas decreased

This year's autumn sowing of barley amounted to 8 500 hectares, which is 36 percent less than last autumn.

Triticale areas decreased for the third year in a row

Triticale areas amount to 21 700 hectares, corresponding to a decrease of 19 percent compared to last year. Compared to the five year average, this is a decrease of 53 percent of the cultivated area. This is now the third year in a row that triticale areas have decreased. Compared to last year, triticale areas decreased by 65 percent in Halland County and 43 percent in Västra Götaland County.

Winter rape at level of last autumn's areas

This autumn 62 000 hectares of winter rape have been sown. This is largely the same level as last year. In Skåne the area of winter rape has decreased, while it has increased in a number of the other counties.
