There are 35 045 holiday homes in Sweden owned by foreigners. This is an increase of 2.9 percent compared to 2010 and 15.3 percent compared to 2007. Swedes living abroad own 12 284 holiday homes in the country. In 2011 foreign ownership of holiday homes in Sweden amounted to 6.2 percent while expatriate Swedes owned 2.2 percent of the total number of holiday homes in the country.

Large differences among the counties
The regional variation of foreign holiday house ownership in relation to the total stock of holiday homes is significant. Foreign ownership is by far the greatest in Kronobergs County at 40.0 percent, but is also significant in Värmland at 22.4 percent and in Jönköping at 15.1 percent. There are 12 counties where foreign ownership is less than 5 percent and in Stockholm, Uppsala, Södermanland, Gotland and Västmanland, foreign ownership is less than 1 percent of the stock.
Owners mostly from Denmark, Germany and Norway
Owners primarily come from Denmark (11 663), Germany (9 964) and Norway (9 262). All of 88.1 percent of foreign owners come from these three countries. The fourth leading country of foreign owners is the Netherlands (1 390).
Foreign ownership increases
Foreign ownership of holiday homes in Sweden increased by 2.9 percent in 2011 compared to 2010 and 15.3 percent compared to 2007. The number of owners from Denmark has increased by 1.3 (15.9 since 2007) percent, from Norway by 7.0 (34.7 since 2007) percent, from Netherlands by 1.5 (31.3 since 2007) and from the Other Countries group by 8.4 percent (36.0 since 2007) while the number of holiday homes owned by persons from Germany has remained largely unchanged since 2007.
Largest percentage increase in northern Sweden
The greatest number of foreign owned holiday homes can be found in Västra Götaland (6 629), Värmland (5 553), Kronoberg (4 737) and Skåne (4 105). However, the largest percentage increase in 2011 compared to 2010 has occurred in Norrbotten(14.7), Västerbotten (10.4) and Västernorrland (11.1 percent).
Most foreign owners in Strömstad
The two municipalities with the most foreign owners are Strömstad and Ljungby. Only in these municipalities does the foreign ownership of holiday homes exceed 1 000 homes. There are 1 279 in Strömstad and 1 174 in Ljungby.
In 20 municipalities at least one third of the holiday homes are owned by foreigners. The greatest foreign ownership in relation to the municipality's total holiday home stock is in Markaryd where an entire 60.7 percent of the total holiday home stock is owned by foreigners, followed by Munkfors with 49.5 and Tingsryd and Älmhult with 48.2 percent each.
