Structure of salaries 2011:

Non-manual workers within private sector have highest average monthly salaries

Non-manual workers in the private sector have the highest average monthly salary, SEK 34 800 according to the Structure of Salaries for 2011. The lowest average monthly salary was found in the municipalities, at SEK 25 000. Hourly wages are presented for manual workers within the private sector and the average hourly wage (pay for time worked) was SEK 143.00 per hour. There were small changes in salary differences between men and women when consideration is taken to occupation, age, education, and working time.

On 20 June 2012 the National Mediation Office will present a more in-depth analysis of wage and salary trends and pay differences between men and women. The structure of salaries will be presented for the entire economy, with hourly wages calculated as monthly salaries.

1 The average salary or the mean value is the sum of the monthly salary and hourly wages in each group divided by the number of persons in each group.
Average salary/hourly wage is included for:
Private sector: fixed pay, fixed supplements, payment per piece, flexible pay, special allowance for inconvenient hours/shift work as well as supplements for risks, soilage, heat etc, benefits, on-call and availability pay, waiting time and travel time pay outside of normal working hours and weekend pay for manual workers.
Municipalities, county councils and central government: base pay including fixed supplements and variable supplements such as time outside ordinary working hours, on-call and availability pay, and also benefits.
2 The measuring period for the Structure of Salaries is a single month, namely September for the private and government sector employees and November for municipal and county council employees. This makes the statistics sensitive to which month the new salary contracts apply from and whether or not the new wages were paid at the measurement occasion. Salary increases after the month of measurement are thus not noted.
3 Last year's press release used the measure for total hourly pay, which is higher than the measure for hours worked. Please see page 59 in this year's Statistical Report AM57SM1201 for a definition.

Between September 2010 and the same month of 2011 the average monthly earnings increased for non-manual workers in the private sector by 2.3 percent to SEK 34 800. The average salary for women was SEK 30 400 (an increase of 2.5 percent), while men earned SEK 38 300 (2.2 percent). Roughly 1.3 million privately employed non-manual workers are included in the statistics, 45 percent of whom are women.

During the same period the average hourly wage (pay for time worked) for manual workers in the private sector rose to SEK 143.00, an increase of 2.1 percent. For women the average hourly wage (pay for time worked) was SEK 133.50 (an increase of 2.5 percent), while men earned SEK 146.60 (2.2 percent). Roughly 1.2 million privately employed manual workers are included in the statistics, and 32 percent of them are women.

In the municipalities the average monthly salary increased from November 2010 to November 2011 by 2.1 percent to SEK 25 000. The average salary for women was SEK 24 700 (an increase of 2.2 percent), while men earned SEK 26 300 (2.0 percent). Roughly 780 000 employed persons are included in the statistics, 79 percent of whom are women.

Within county councils the average monthly salary from November 2010 and the same month in 2011 increased by 2.8 percent, amounting to SEK 31 200. For women the average salary was 29 100 (an increase by 3.0 percent), while men earned 39 300 (2.1 percent). Roughly 230 000 employed persons are included in the statistics, 79 percent of whom are women.

Within the central government sector the average monthly salary from September 2010 and the same month in 2011 increased by 1.4 percent to SEK 31 500. For women the average salary was 30 000 (an increase by 2.2 percent) while men earned 33 100 (an increase of 0.6 percent). Definitions and explanations

Facts about Structure of Salaries

Structure of Salaries is an annual survey based on individual information. It contains information about sex, occupation, age, education, working hours and region as well as different combinations of these variables. The purpose of the survey is to offer comparative information about the structure of salaries in the labour market. It illustrates the level, structure and development of salaries.

Thus, it is appropriate to use the Structure of Salaries as a basis for comparative purposes between men's and women's salaries. It is not suitable to use the annual Structure of Salaries to evaluate the salary development for separate, smaller groups because the figures of change also depend on changes to a group's composition, e.g. young people who enter the work force and elderly who leave it.

The statistics are divided into five sectors, private sector: non-manual workers and manual workers, municipalities, county councils and central government. These statistics are broken down by industrial sector within the private sector.  A sample survey is conducted for the private sector, comprising roughly half of all employees, while the public sector is given a total survey.
