Peat 2011 - Production, use and environmental impact:

Use of peat decreases in the energy sector

Peat as fuel in electricity and heat production has decreased. During the last two years the decrease has been 25 percent. During the same period the use of fuel increased by 3 percent within the sector.

The share of peat as an energy carrier in the energy supply is today 0.5 percent.

Average production of peat

The harvest of fuel peat in 2011 was 2.1 million cubic metres, which is about the same as the average harvest during the ten latest years. Fuel peat is used mainly for production of hot water in heating plants. In 2011, the use of fuel peat in Sweden amounted to 3.0 TWh. This amount is lower in comparison to 2010.

Harvest of peat for horticultural use was 1.61 million cubic metres in Sweden in 2011, which is an increase of  28 percent compared to 2010.

Prices and taxes

The price of fuel peat has increased from SEK 141 in 2010 to SEK 146 in 2011.Around 70–85 percent of the production price represents costs at the producer stage, while the rest is in loading, transportation and terminal costs.
