The purpose of the study is to present statistics on green areas within and in close vicinity of urban settlements. The statistics encompass figures regarding the population’s access to green areas. Only localities with at least 10 000 inhabitants are studied.
The study is based on a method using satellite imagery combined with register data.

Statistics Sweden presents statistics on changes in the degree of vegetation and green space within localities for the period 2000-2005. Statistics are presented for the ten largest localities according to their population in 2005.
