Coast, shores and islands in Sweden

The purpose of the study is to describe conditions regarding people, buildings and housing in coastal areas, along shorelines and on islands. Figures are presented on length of shorelines, the numbers and sizes of islands and statistics on populated islands.

There are about 221 800 islands in Sweden. Stockholm County has the most islands, followed by Västra Götaland. At the end of 2008, 1 085 islands had a permanent population. 598 of these islands did not have a fixed link to the mainland.  Read the entire press release
