Family structures and separations among first time parents
Of the couples who became parents in 2000, 27 percent had separated ten years later. The risk of separation is greatest in the years immediately after the child is born and then subsides slightly later on. It is however higher in all the years studied compared to the year of the child’s birth. Starting from the time of the child’s birth, parents who later separated cohabited for an average of four years and eight months before the separation.
