  • Employment of older people has doubled in 20 years

    Employment for 65–74-year-olds has doubled in Sweden over the past 20 years. A new report from Statistics Sweden's Labour Force Surveys (LFS) shows how the working life of older people has changed over the past two decades and what the situation looks like today.

  • Further reduction of temporary employees

    In February 2024, the number of employed people amounted to 5 174 000, not seasonally adjusted. Among these, 589 000 people were temporary employees, which is a decrease of 98 000 people compared to February 2023. The average number of hours worked per week was 171.0 million. The number of unemployed people amounted to 480 000, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 8.5 percent. Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data showed that the employment rate was 69.2 percent and that there was an increase in both the number of unemployed people and the unemployment rate, which amounted to 8.1 percent.

  • Slowdown in the labour market in 2023

    There were on average 5 270 000 employed persons aged 15–74 in 2023, which is an increase of 71 000 compared to 2022. The number of permanent employees increased by 97 000, while the number of temporary employees decreased by 34 000. The employment rate increased by 0.6 percentage points to 69.4 percent. The number of unemployed people increased by 18 000 to 440 000. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 7.7 percent.

  • Weaker development on the labour market

    In January 2024, the number of employed people amounted to 5 136 000, not seasonally adjusted. The average number of hours worked per week was 151.5 million. The number of unemployed people increased by 55 000 to 479 000. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 8.5 percent, an increase of 0,9 percentage points. According to seasonally adjusted and smoothed data, the employment rate was 69.2 percent. Both the number of unemployed and the unemployment rate increased. The unemployment rate amounted to 8.1 percent.

  • Unemployment continued to rise during the fourth quarter 2023

    In the fourth quarter of 2023, the number of employed persons amounted to 5 226 000, not seasonally adjusted. There were 644 000 temporary employees, a decrease of 54 000. The average number of hours worked per week amounted to 164.5 million hours. There were 418 000 unemployed persons, which is an increase of 37 000 persons. This corresponds to an unemployment rate of 7.4 percent, an increase of 0.6 percentage points. Seasonally adjusted and smoothed data shows an increase in both the number and share of unemployed. The seasonally adjusted and smoothed unemployment rate amounted to 8.0 percent.
