  • Increased exports and decreased imports of goods contribute to a current account surplus

    The current account surplus amounted to SEK 116.7 billion during the fourth quarter of 2023, which is an increase by SEK 8.7 billion compared to the fourth quarter of 2022. The increase is due to a strengthened trade balance, which can be explained by increased exports and decreased imports of goods. The current account surplus is reduced by a negative balance of services.

  • Increased holdings in foreign portfolio assets

    Swedish holdings in foreign portfolio assets increased in the first half of 2023. Total holdings amounted to SEK 9 038 billion, which was an increase of 12 percent compared to the end of the second half of 2022. Holdings in shares accounted for the largest percentage increase. Holding in funds and long-term debt securities did also increase while holding in short-term debt securities decreased.

  • Income on Swedish direct investment assets abroad increased in 2022

    Income on Swedish direct investment assets abroad amounted to SEK 491 billion in 2022, which is an increase by 19 percent compared to 2021. In the same period, income on foreign direct investment assets in Sweden increased by 15 percent and amounted to SEK 272 billion. At the end of 2022, Swedish direct investment assets abroad amounted to SEK 5 150 billion, which is an increase of SEK 782 billion compared with the previous year. Foreign assets in Sweden increased by SEK 303 billion and amounted to SEK 4 174 billion at the end of 2022.

  • Increased exports of services contribute to a stronger current account surplus

    The current account surplus amounted to SEK 117.4 billion during the third quarter of 2023, which is an increase by SEK 43.2 billion compared to the third quarter of 2022. In addition to a stronger export of services, the balance of trade contributes the increase, which mainly is due to a decrease in imports of goods.

  • Increased holdings in foreign portfolio assets

    Swedish holdings in foreign portfolio assets increased in the second half of 2022. Total holdings amounted to SEK 8 065 billion, which was an increase of 1 percent compared to the end of the first half of 2022. Holdings in short-term debt securities accounted for the largest percentage increase. Holdings in shares did also increase while holdings in funds decreased.
