  • Decreased voter turnout in all but two municipalities

Voter turnout decreased by three percentage points in the 2022 election to the Riksdag (Swedish parliament). The decrease was greater in municipalities with an already low voter turnout compared to municipalities with a higher turnout. The decline was even greater in the electoral districts with the lowest voter turnout in 2018.

  • Many voters uncertain as the end of the term of office approaches

During the 2018–2022 term of office, the voter opinion has at times been calm, sometimes shifting vastly. In May 2022, three months ahead of the Swedish elections, one in five voters do not know which political party they would give their vote to. And even among those who state a party some voters are more or less sure of their choice.

  • More older people in the 2022 elections

The number of Swedish citizens registered in the population who are eligible to vote in all elections is expected to increase by about 180 000 people and amount to 7.5 million. Around 1 070 000 among these are 75 years and older, which is 150 000 more than in 2018. The number of foreign citizens, who are entitled to vote in municipal and regional council elections, is also expected to increase.

  • Highest turnout since 1985 general elections

Turnout increased for the fourth consecutive election in the 2018 general elections. More people than before also chose to vote in advance.

  • Fewer young people and more foreign citizens entitled to vote in the 2018 elections

In total, about 98 000 more Swedish citizens registered in Sweden will be entitled to vote in the 2018 election compared with the 2014 Riksdag election. There are expected to be 62 000 fewer first-time voters than in the 2014 Riksdag election. In the municipal council election, 123 000 more foreign citizens will be entitled to vote.
