Business production decreased in February

Production in the business sector decreased by 0.7 percent in seasonally adjusted figures in February compared with January. Compared with the corresponding month of the previous year, production in the business sector increased by 5.2 percent in calendar adjusted figures.

The decrease in total production was mainly driven by the service sector, which decreased by 0.8 percent compared with previous month and in seasonally adjusted figures. Construction decreased by 1.7 percent, but the sector accounts for only 8 percent of total business production. Industrial production increased by 0.1 percent.

In the three month period from December 2016 to February 2017, production increased by 2.2 percent compared with the previous three-month period, September to November, in seasonally adjusted figures. Production in construction showed the strongest development, with an increase of 6.8 percent.

Construction showed strongest growth compared with February 2016

In calendar adjusted figures, production in the business sector increased by 5.2 percent in February compared with the corresponding month in the previous year. Construction had the strongest development, with an increase of 13.3 percent, while industrial production had the weakest development with an increase of 3.3 percent.

The figures for February are preliminary. Since the previous publication, the change in production in January compared with December has been revised upwards by 0.7 percentage points to an increase of 1.6 percent. The change in production in January compared with the corresponding month of the previous year has been revised upwards by 1 percentage points to an increase of 6.3 percent.

Definitions and explanations

From December 2012, Statistics Sweden produces monthly statistics on production in the business sector. The statistics are compiled based on requests from users. They are an important indicator of the business cycle, as business production accounts for approximately 70 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). These statistics should be seen as experimental until further notice.

Revisions

hen the Business Production Index for a new month is published, the index for previous months is also revised. This is mainly due to new and revised information that has been received. Working day adjusted figures, seasonally adjusted figures and trend figures are always revised from January 2000 onwards.
