Business inventories decreased in the fourth quarter 2016

Swedish business inventories decreased by SEK 11.5 billion in constant prices in the fourth quarter. This development corresponds to a decrease of 2.3 percent in volume.

Inventories in trade decreased by SEK 4.6 billion in the fourth quarter, which corresponds to a decrease of 1.8 percent in volume. Total inventories in industry decreased by SEK 6.9 billion in the fourth quarter, which corresponds to a decrease of 2.8 percent in volume.

Industrial inventories decreased

The level of input goods in total industry decreased by SEK 1.6 billion, while the level of finished goods and goods in progress decreased by SEK 5.3 billion. This means that total inventories in industry decreased by SEK 6.9 billion in the fourth quarter.

In the manufacturing industry, the change in total inventories was negative in a majority of the sub-sectors. Inventories decreased the most in the motor vehicle industry sub-sector, by SEK 2.4 billion. The largest increase in inventories, SEK 0.7 billion, was found in the Industry for pulp and paper industry.

Decrease in trade inventories

Inventories in trade decreased in the fourth quarter by SEK 4.6 billion. Inventories in retail trade, excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles, and in wholesale decreased by SEK 1.4 billion and SEK 6.7 billion respectively, while retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles increased by SEK 3.4 billion.

Revisions

The figures for the fourth quarter are preliminary. Since the previous publication, the development in total industrial inventories in the third quarter 2016 remained at a decrease of SEK 2.5 billion. The development in total trade inventories in the third quarter 2016 has been revised downwards by SEK 4.7 billion to an increase of SEK 8.0 billion.
