Marginally increased industrial production in February

Industrial production increased marginally by 0.2 percent in February compared with January in seasonally adjusted figures. Compared with February 2016, industrial production increased by 4.1 percent in calendar adjusted figures.

Among the industry sub-sectors, the largest increase compared with the previous month was in the aggregate for chemical and pharmaceutical industry, while the largest decrease was in the electric equipment industry. In the last three months, December 2016 to February 2017, industrial production increased by 1.6 percent compared with the previous three months, September to November 2016, in seasonally adjusted figures.

Compared with February of the previous year the industrial production increased by 4.1 percent in calendar adjusted figures. The strongest increase came from aggregate for chemical and pharmaceutical industry.

The figures for February are preliminary. Since the previous publication, the change in industrial production in January compared with December 2016 has been revised upwards by 1.3 percentage points to an increase of 3.3 percent. The change in production in January 2017 compared with the corresponding month in the previous year has been revised upwards by 3.0 percentage points to an increase of 4.3 percent. The large revision this month is due to new figures in the aggregate for chemical and pharmaceutical industry.


It is relevant to analyse the seasonal and calendar adjustments for a better understanding of the statistics.

Development of Index of Service Production 

Revisions

When the Industrial Production Index for a new month is published, the indices for previous months are also revised. The material is normally revised for two to four months retroactively, depending on which month of the quarter is the reference month. The whole previous quarter is revised when publishing the first and second months of a quarter. Calendar adjusted figures, seasonally adjusted figures and trend figures are revised from January 2000 onwards.
