7 out of 10 had an established status in the labour market two years after higher vocational education

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2017-12-13 9.30

69 per cent of graduates 2013 from higher vocational education programmes, had an established status in the labour market in 2015. Among students who completed a post-secondary course in arts and culture or a long special folk high school course, about 30 per cent had an established status in the labour market and 30 per cent studied in the following year after completion of the course.

The statistics are based on three different registry studies where Statistics Sweden describes the status in the labour market and the transition to higher education after completed studies in three forms of education: Higher vocational education, long special folk high school courses and post-secondary courses in arts and culture.

Higher vocational education

Among graduates from higher vocational education programmes 2013, 66 per cent of women and 72 per cent of men had an established status in the labour market in 2015. There were major differences regarding the proportion having an established status between graduates from different fields of education. The proportion with an established status was highest in the fields of construction and transport services. The proportion was lowest in the fields of agriculture, gardening, forestry and fishing, as well as in the field of arts and media. There were also major regional differences. The proportion having an established status was highest among graduates from programmes conducted in Örebro county.

Long special folk high school courses and post-secondary courses in arts and culture

There are courses preparing for higher education in the field of fine arts and vocational courses in long special folk high school courses and post-secondary courses in arts and culture.
Among students who completed long special folk high school courses or post-secondary courses in arts and culture in 2014, about one third had an established status in the labour market in 2015 and one third were studying. The differences between men and women were small.

Among students who completed courses in the field of fine arts and media, where the courses mainly prepares the students for higher education, approximately one third studied at university during the year after completion of such a course. In other fields, where most of the courses aim at a profession, about half had an established status in the labour market.

Definitions and explanations

The measurement “status in the labour market” is a register-based measurement that describes the main activity and the connection to the labour market during a whole year (calendar year). The status is divided into six classes: Established status in the labour market, Uncertain status in the labour market, Weak status in the labour market, Higher education studies, Other studies, and Neither work nor studies. The measurement has been used regularly in follow-ups of graduates from upper secondary school and from university.
