The number of employees continued to increase

In August 2017, there were 5 109 000 employed persons aged 15–74, not seasonally adjusted. This was an increase of 148 000 persons compared with August 2016. There were 326 000 unemployed persons and the unemployment rate was 6.0 percent, a decrease of 0.6 percentage points. The number of hours worked averaged 133.4 million per week. According to calendar adjusted figures this was an increase of 2.9 percent. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of employed persons and small changes in the unemployment rate, which was 6.7 percent.

Estimations of change between August 2016 and August 2017 may be slightly overestimated. This has an impact on comparisons with August 2016 regarding the labour force, employment and employed persons. The estimations of change should therefore be used with caution. Accuracy in level estimations for August 2017 is normal.

In August 2017, there were 5 109 000 employed persons aged 15─74, not seasonally adjusted. This was an increase of 148 000 compared with August 2016. The number of employed men increased by 79 000 to 2 681 000, while the number of employed women increased by 69 000 to 2 428 000. The employment rate was 69.0 percent, an increase of 1.3 percentage points. Among men, the employment rate was 71.2 percent, an increase of 1.2 percentage points. Among women, it was 66.6 percent, an increase of 1.3 percentage points. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows a continued increase in the number of employed persons and an increase in the employment rate, compared with recent months. There were 5 028 000 employed persons in August 2017, which corresponds to an employment rate of 67.9 percent.

The number of employees aged 15─74 in August 2017 amounted to 4 620 000, not seasonally adjusted. Compared with August 2016, this was an increase of 145 000. The number of permanent employees in the same period amounted to 3 796 000, an increase of 117 000. The number of temporary employees amounted to 824 000. Compared with nearby months, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of permanent employees, while the number of temporary employees is decreasing.

On average, the number of hours worked in August 2017 amounted to 133.4 million per week, not seasonally adjusted. Calendar adjusted figures show an increase of 2.9 percentage points compared with August 2016. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows a continued increase in the number of hours worked per week. In August 2017, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data amounted to 152.2 million hours worked per week.

In August 2017, the number of unemployed persons aged 1574 amounted to 326 000, not seasonally adjusted. The unemployment rate amounted to 6.0 percent, a decrease of 0.6 percentage points compared with August 2016. The number of unemployed men amounted to 177 000 and the number of unemployed women amounted to 149 000. The unemployment rate among men was 6.2 percent and among women it was 5.8 percent, a decrease of 0.9 percentage points. The number of unemployed young people aged 15─24 was 88 000. The unemployment rate among young people was 13.1 percent.

Among persons aged 15–74, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows small changes in the number of unemployed persons and in the unemployment rate. The number of unemployed persons was 360 000 in August 2017, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 6.7 percent. Among young people aged 15─24, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows small changes in the number of unemployed persons and in the unemployment rate. The number of young people who were unemployed was 112 000, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 17.9 percent.
