Continued increase in employment

In September 2017, there were 5 052 000 employed persons aged 15–74, not seasonally adjusted. This was an increase of 136 000 persons compared with September 2016. There were 332 000 unemployed persons and the unemployment rate was 6.2 percent. The number of hours worked averaged 171.2 million per week. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of employed persons and small changes in the unemployment rate, which was 6.7 percent.

In September 2017, there were 5 052 000 employed persons aged 15─74, not seasonally adjusted, which was an increase of 136 000 compared with September 2016. The number of employed men were 2 657 000 and the number of employed women were 2 395 000, which was an increase of 89 000 and 47 000 respectively. The employment rate was 68.1 percent, an increase of 1.1 percentage points. Among men, the employment rate was 70.5 percent, an increase of 1.5 percentage points. Among women, it was 65.6 percent. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows a continued increase in both the number of employed persons and in the employment rate compared with recent months. The number of employed persons were 5 040 000, which corresponds to an employment rate of 68.0 percent.

The number of employees aged 15─74 in September 2017 amounted to 4 549 000, not seasonally adjusted. Compared with September 2016, this was an increase of 139 000 of which 76 000 were men and 64 000 were women. The number of permanent employees in the same period amounted to 3 797 000, an increase of 99 000 of which 44 000 were men and 55 000 were women. The number of temporary employees amounted to 752 000. Compared with nearby months, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows an increase in the number of permanent employees and small changes in the number of temporary employees.

On average, the number of hours worked in September 2017 amounted to 171.2 million per week, not seasonally adjusted. Calendar adjusted figures show no significant difference compared with September 2016. Smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows a small increase in the number of hours worked per week. In September 2017, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data amounted to 152.1 million hours worked per week.

In September 2017, the number of unemployed persons aged 15─74 amounted to 332 000, not seasonally adjusted, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 6.2. The number of unemployed men amounted to 176 000 and the number of unemployed women amounted to 156 000. Among men the unemployment rate was 6.2 percent and among women it was 6.1 percent. The number of unemployed young people aged 15─24 was 95 000, of whom 46 000 were full time students. The unemployment rate among young people was 16.1 percent. Among persons aged 15–74, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows small changes in both the number of unemployed persons and in the unemployment rate. The number of unemployed persons was 363 000 in September 2017, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 6.7 percent. Among young people aged 15─24, smoothed and seasonally adjusted data shows small changes in both the number of unemployed persons and in the unemployment rate. The number of young people who were unemployed was 113 000, which corresponds to an unemployment rate of 18.0 percent.
