Net trade balance at SEK -5.3 billion in August

In August 2018, Swedish exports of goods amounted to SEK 113.5 billion, while imports of goods amounted to SEK 118.8 billion. As a result, the net trade balance was SEK -5.3 billion.
Foreign trade in goods resulted in a net trade deficit of SEK 5.3 billion in August 2018, according to preliminary calculations. In August 2017, there was a net trade deficit of SEK 6.7 billion.
The value of exports in August was SEK 113.5 billion, while imports were valued at SEK 118.8 billion. Compared with August 2017, exports increased by 15 percent in value, while imports increased by 12 percent in value.
Trade in goods with countries outside the EU resulted in a surplus of SEK 4.3 billion, while EU trade resulted in a deficit of SEK 9.6 billion.
The number of weekdays in August 2018 was the same as in August 2017.
Seasonally adjusted, the net trade deficit amounted to SEK 1.3 billion in August, compared with a deficit of SEK 2.0 billion in July. The corresponding figure for June was a deficit of SEK 2.7 billion.
Net trade (Jan – Aug 2018) showed a deficit of SEK 22.4 billion
In this period, the value of exports increased by 11 percent, while the value of imports increased by 13 percent compared with the corresponding period last year. Exports were valued at SEK 935.4 billion and imports were valued at SEK 957.8 billion, resulting in a net trade deficit of SEK 22.4 billion for January – August 2018. The corresponding net trade balance for these months last year was a deficit of SEK 5.6 billion.

Definitions and explanations
Last month’s import and export values in trade with the EU are estimates based on data provided by a large subset of companies that trade with the EU. Most (95 percent) of the deviation between these estimates and the subsequent outcome lies within the range of SEK -2 billion and SEK 1 billion for both imports and exports.
Import and export values for trade in goods with non-EU countries are based largely on data from Swedish Customs.
