Outcome of the fourth meeting of the Council Working Party on Statistics

Last updated: 2023-04-20

At the meeting, the Member States expressed their concerns regarding the broad power of the Commission in the proposal to adopt changes in the legislative act through delegated acts. The Member States acknowledged the need for more flexible statistics but also emphasised a need for stability in the data production over time.

A short report on the state of play with other regulations where statistics is mentioned was given by the Presidency. The adoption of the Regulation on ESA 2010 was signed during the March Parliament plenary session and is now awaiting to be published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

The European Parliament has not made any progress on proposal for new environmental accounts modules (EEEA) yet. The Presidency is currently waiting for a reply from the Rapporteur regarding whether it would be possible to start the inter-institutional negotiations in near future.

With regard to the Data Act, Coreper I endorsed the mandate for the inter-institutional negotiations based on the sixth compromise text on 24 March 2023.

The Commission proposal for revision of Regulation 223/2009 on European Statistics will be sent out in the first week of April. In the last week of April, an extra ESSC meeting will be conducted digitally. Thereafter, the proposal should be adopted by the Commission in May 2023.

The next meeting of the Council Working Party on Statistics is scheduled for Thursday 11 of May 2023 in Brussels.
