  • Fewer young politicians in the municipalities

    Women, young people under the age of 30 and people born abroad are still underrepresented among elected representatives in the Swedish municipalities. When more advanced assignments are studied, this pattern gets even more evident, as in previous terms of office.

  • Women, young people and foreign born persons are underrepresented in top positions in Sweden’s municipalities

    Women hold one third of all municipal executive board chair positions in Sweden and there is also a gender gap in other chair positions in the municipalities. Young people and foreign born persons continue to be underrepresented and an increasingly large share of elected representatives are aged 65 years and older, according to Statistics Sweden’s survey on elected representatives in municipalities and regions in 2019, published today.

  • Elected representatives are older and fewer in number

    Elected representatives in municipalities and county councils are getting older, at the same time as the number of elected representatives has decreased.

  • Older persons no longer underrepresented

    The percentage of elected representatives age 65 and older continues to increase. This group has nearly doubled in size compared to 2003.
