  • More qualified teachers but a decreased proportion within the school

    In 2024 the total number of qualified teachers is approximately 160 000. This represents a 25 per cent increase over the past ten years. During the same period, the number of teachers within schools has also increased, but to a slightly lesser extent. At the same time, the number of teachers leaving the profession has continued to rise.

  • More teachers over time but a higher proportion leaving the profession

    The share of certified teachers increases over time, however, the share of those leaving the profession also increases. This is shown in new statistics from Statistics Sweden. Over the past seven years, the number of certified teachers leaving the profession has increased. Teachers outside the school is the one group that has increased more than other groups over time.

  • More time for teaching may encourage a return to the profession

    About half of the teachers who left school would consider returning to the teaching profession. A return of teachers who have left the profession could reduce the teacher shortage. The share of those considering returning to the profession has decreased compared to the 2016 follow-up.
