Adverse weather conditions led to lower cereal production

The total cereal production for the year is estimated at 5 million tonnes, which is 16 percent less than last year. The total production is 7 percent less than the average in the last five years, in which 2018 stands out with crop failure due to drought. In 2021, extreme rainfall in spring and autumn, as well as dry weather during the summer growth period led to lower crop yields.
Cold weather and rainfall delayed the spring sowings, and later the dry and warm summer hampered crop growth. When it was time for harvesting, it began to rain again, and part of the crops had to be left unharvested since the fields were too wet to be passable. There were also reports of flooding in some parts of the country.
The areas with high yield autumn-sown crops were large. Winter wheat areas were the largest on record. The yield per hectare of winter wheat, on the other hand, decreased by 12 percent compared with the previous year. For spring barley and oats, yields per hectare decreased even more, by 24 percent and 28 percent, respectively, compared with the previous year.
Rape and turnip rape harvest matches last year’s level
The preliminary estimate of the total production of rape and turnip rape is 341 200 tonnes, which is on a par with a year ago. At the national level, the yield per hectare of winter rape, which is the dominant crop, was 6 percent less than in 2020.
Total harvest of peas is 20 percent less than last year
The total production of peas is estimated at 58 200 tonnes, which is 20 percent less than both last year’s harvest and the five-year average. The preliminary estimate of the total production of field beans is 44 900 tonnes, which is 23 percent less than last year’s total harvest and 39 percent below the five-year average. The yield per hectare of field beans was 24 percent lower than in 2020.

These preliminary statistics are based on data from a subsample of 1 108 farms. More accurate results based on the entire sample of 4 434 farms will be presented on 14 December. The results will then also be published by county and by the eight production areas of agriculture.
Information on autumn-sown areas in 2021 will be published on 30 November.
