Production of cereals, dried pulses and oilseeds in 2016:

Drought lowered harvest levels in Skåne and Halland

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden and Swedish Board of Agriculture 2016-12-14 9.30

Compared with last year's unusually high harvest levels, this year's yields per hectare of cereal crops are lower in nearly all parts of the country. In southern Sweden there are reports of crops that ripened prematurely due to water shortage. Yields per hectare decreased most in Skåne and Halland Counties compared with last year.

For many of the crops in Skåne and Halland counties, yields per hectare are even lower than the five-year average and the ten-year average. On the other hand, in the four most northern counties, this year's yields per hectare are higher than last year's results. The total production of cereals in Sweden is estimated at over 5.4 million tonnes in 2016, which is 12 percent less than last year's large production of cereals and on the same level as the average in the five most recent years.

Low yield per hectare of winter rape – in Skåne in particular

Yields per hectare of winter rape are significantly lower than last year's levels in all counties except Södermanland County, where the difference lies within the margin of error. In Skåne County, the production of winter rape was 27 percent lower than last year's results, and 23 percent lower than the five-year average. Comments about damage caused by diamondback moths and other harmful organisms have been commonplace. The total yield of rape and turnip rape is estimated at 268 100 tonnes, which is 25 percent less than last year's results and 16 percent less than the five-year average.

High yield per hectare of peas

Peas and have produced good yields in many areas, even if crop failure has also occurred. In the country as a whole, the yield per hectare of peas is close to previous record-high levels. Increased areas under cultivation in high yield plains districts have contributed to the high yield per hectare at national level. The total yields of peas and field beans are estimated at 93 200 tonnes and 103 700 tonnes respectively.

Winter killing and dry weather led to lower harvest levels

Both winter killing and dry weather in the autumn-sown crops' growth phase led to lower production levels. In fact, in some holdings, yields per hectare were lower for the autumn-sown crops than for the spring-sown crops.

A more detailed report of this survey for individual crops, counties and production areas has been published in the Statistical Report and on the Swedish Board of Agriculture's website www.jordbruksverket.se under Statistics.

Statistical databases

Time series with the final production statistics are available in Statistics Sweden's Statistical Database and in the statistical database of the Swedish Board of Agriculture www.jordbruksverket.se. With regard to some of the crops, there are time series with harvest statistics from 1913.

Next publishing will be

Final results for 2016 will be reported in April 2017. These yield statistics are based on the data from all forms of cultivation that occur in the country. Yield statistics on organic and conventional cultivation will be reported in June 2017.
