Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2025-12-05 8.00
The preliminary statistics for 2025 show that the total production of table potatoes was 547 000 tonnes in Sweden, while the production of starch potatoes is estimated at 459 000 tonnes.
Total production of table potatoes increased by 15%
The total production of table potatoes increased by 15 percent compared to 2024. Compared to the five-year average the total production is 13 % more. Halland county had the largest increase in total production with 38 percent compared with 2024, followed by Östergötland county with 30 percent, Gotland county with 16 percent and Skåne county with 8 percent.
Historically high production of starch potatoes
The total production of starch potatoes is estimated at 459 000 tonnes. This is an increase in production of 55 000 tonnes (14 percent) compared to the final total production for 2024 and 96 000 tonnes (26 percent) compared to the five-year average.
“This is a record-high production of starch potatoes. The increase is explained by a larger cultivation area for starch potatoes combined with favourable growing conditions,” says Sergio Tena Vasco, agricultural statistician at Statistics Sweden.
The average yield of table potatoes, including new potatoes, was 35 200 kilos per hectare in 2025. This is 7 percent higher than in 2024 and the second highest ever recorded in the statistics.
The average yield of starch potatoes was 43 600 kilos per hectare in 2025, showing no significant difference compared with 2024 or the five-year average.
Largest starch potato area in 40 years
The area of starch potatoes, including seed cultivation, was 10 540 hectares in 2025. This is an increase of 1 440 hectares, or 16 percent, compared with 2024. This is the largest cultivation area for starch potatoes in more than 40 years. The increase is mainly due to starch potato cultivation becoming more profitable and to stable demand from industry and the export market.
In 2025, the cultivated area of table potatoes was estimated at 15 540 hectares, which is 7 percent more than the historically low area in 2024.
The unharvested area is estimated at 220 hectares. The average for the previous five years was 280 hectares. The main reason given by the farmers for the unharvested areas in 2025 was rain that caused flooding and resulted in rotting crops.
Definitions and explanations
These harvest statistics are based on data from all forms of cultivation used in Sweden. Yield and production statistics on organic and conventional cultivation will be reported in June 2025.
