Consumption within three out of the four largest weighted sectors decreased on a monthly basis. Retail trade, mostly food and beverages, which accounts for approximately 20 percent, decreased by 3.1 percent. Transport and retail sales and service of motor vehicles, weighted with 13 percent, decreased by 2.0 percent. Recreation and culture, goods and services, weighted likewise, decreased by 3.9 percent.

On the other hand, Housing, electricity, gas and heating, which has the highest weight in the indicator with around 25 percent, increased with 0.9 percent compared with April, measured in seasonally adjusted figures. On a yearly basis, consumption increased with 1.8 percent, measured in constant prices and working day adjusted figures. One circumstance contributing to the growth in consumption within this sector is the fact that it had been much colder compared with May last year (May 2024 had been unusually warm), leading to a higher spending on electricity and heating.

Sector clothing and footwear had been weak in May. Compared with April consumption decreased by 10.2 percent and compared with May 2024 by 17.8 percent. Consumption within Restaurants, cafes, hotels and other accommodation services on the other hand increased by 3.3 precent on a monthly basis and by 3.2 percent compared with May last year.
