Investments decreased by SEK 5.7 billion or 7 percent in the first quarter of 2021 compared with the first quarter of 2020

Variation between different industries was significant. Investments by real estate enterprises decreased by 14 percent and amounted to SEK 28.6 billion. Investments by information and communication enterprises increased by 24 percent and amounted to SEK 4.4 billion.

Total investments in this quarter amounted to SEK 71.5 billion. The outcome of the Investment Survey shows that enterprises’ investments decreased by 7 percent compared with the first quarter of 2020.

Investments decreased in most of the Investment Survey’s nine industry groups in the first quarter of 2021. In percentage terms, the real estate industry and the trade in goods industry decreased the most; these industries decreased investments by 14 percent each. The real estate industry’s investments amounted to SEK 28.6 billion and the trade in goods industry’s investments amounted to SEK 4.0 billion. The energy, water and sewer industry decreased investments by 12 percent to SEK 8.6 billion, and investments made by the industry for transportation and storage decreased by 11 percent to SEK 3.9 billion.

Investments by information and communication enterprises increased by 24 percent and amounted to SEK 4.4 billion. Investments in this industry consisted mainly of machinery and equipment, which accounted for SEK 3.7 billion, and new construction, extensions and rebuilding of existing buildings, which accounted for SEK 619 million.

Enterprises invested mainly in machinery and equipment. This class of assets accounted for 50 percent, corresponding to SEK 35.9 billion, of total investments in the quarter. This is an increase of 2 percentage points compared with the first quarter of 2020. New construction, extensions and rebuilding of existing buildings accounted for 26 percent, corresponding to SEK 18.7 billion, of total investments. This is a decrease of 3 percentage points compared with the first quarter of 2020. Housing accounted for 15 percent, corresponding to SEK 10.8 billion of total investments, Purchases of buildings and facilities accounted for 9 percent, corresponding to SEK 6.0 billion, of total investments in the first quarter.

Definitions and explanations

All the data in this statistical news is reported in current prices. All comparisons have been made with the corresponding quarter in 2020.

These statistics are based on data from Statistics Sweden’s Business Register database. All enterprises with at least 200 employees are included, while enterprises with between 20 and 199 employees are sampled. In some activities, enterprises with between 5 and 199 employees are sampled. Enterprises in the mining, quarrying and manufacturing industry sector with between 10 and 19 employees are taxed based on investment information from enterprises with between 20 and 49 employees.

The sectors included in this survey are SNI 05–49 (excl. 49.32), 51–53, 58, 61–63, 64.1, 65, 68 (excl. 68.204), 71–75, and 77–82 according to NACE Rev 2.
