Swedish enterprises invested SEK 339.7 billion in 2021

The investment rate among enterprises decreased by 2 percent in 2021 compared with 2020.

The total investments amounted to SEK 339.7 billion in 2021, which corresponded to a decrease by SEK 8.5 billion or 2 percent compared with 2020. The largest investments were carried out in the real estate sector that accounted for 40 percent of the total investments in 2021, The mining and quarrying and manufacturing industry accounted for 22 percent of the total investments.

The largest decrease was found in the energy, water and sewer industry, which decreased their investments by SEK 11.5 billion compared with 2020. As a percentage, the energy, water and sewer industry decreased by 22 percent to an investment level of SEK 40.6 billion. The transportation and storage industry (excl. aviation) decreased their investments by 14 percent to SEK 18.4 billion, compared with 2020.

Several industries increased their investments in 2021 compared with 2020. Information and communication increased the most, with 41 percent, to an investment level of SEK 20.9 billion. Business services increased its investments by SEK 4.2 billion, corresponding to an increase by 28 percent. The mining and quarrying and manufacturing industry as well as the construction industry increased their investments in 2021 with 8 and 9 percent respectively. 

Planned investments in 2022

According to the results of the Investment Survey, planned investments are expected to amount to SEK 336.5 billion in 2022. If this forecast is accurate, investments will decrease by 1 percent in 2022 compared with 2021.

Definitions and explanations

All the data in this statistical news is reported in current prices. All comparisons have been made with the corresponding quarter in 2020.

These statistics are based on data from Statistics Sweden’s Business Register database. All enterprises with at least 200 employees are included, while enterprises with between 20 and 199 employees are sampled. In some activities, enterprises with between 5 and 199 employees are sampled. Enterprises in the mining, quarrying and manufacturing industry sector with between 10 and 19 employees are taxed based on investment information from enterprises with between 20 and 49 employees.

The sectors included in this survey are SNI 05–49 (excl. 49.32), 51–53, 58, 61–63, 64.1, 65, 68 (excl. 68.204), 71–75, and 77–82 according to NACE Rev 2.
