Investments increased by SEK 11.6 billion in the second quarter 2021

The investment rate of businesses increased in the second quarter compared with the first quarter of 2021. In total, the investments of the businesses amounted to SEK 83.1 billion during this period. Investments remained unchanged compared with the second quarter of 2020.

The outcome of the Investment Survey shows that the enterprises’ investments rose by 16 percent, corresponding to SEK 11.6 billion, in the second quarter of 2021 compared with the previous quarter. Most industries increased investments between the first and the second quarter of 2021. Banks and insurance companies noted the largest increase in percentage terms, at 67 percent, and amounted to an investment level of SEK 1.6 billion. The information and communication industry increased investments by SEK 2.6 billion, corresponding to an increase of 58 percent. The business service industry increased investments by 29 percent to an investment level of SEK 5.1 billion. The mining, and quarrying and manufacturing industry increased investments by SEK 1.3 billion, and amounted to SEK 16.3 billion. The real estate industry increased investments by SEK 3.6 billion, and amounted to SEK 32.3 billion. The trade in goods industry showed a small decline of 3 percent compared with the first quarter of 2021.

Investments increased in machinery and equipment

Enterprises invested mainly in machinery and equipment. This class of assets accounted for 53 percent of the total investments in the quarter, corresponding to SEK 43.9 billion. This is an increase of 3 percentage points compared with the first quarter of 2021. New construction, extensions and rebuilding of existing buildings accounted for 27 percent of total investments, up by 1 percentage point compared with the first quarter of 2021. Housing accounted for 15 percent, which corresponds to SEK 12.9 billion, of total investments. Purchases of buildings and facilities accounted for 5 percent in the second quarter of 2021, down by 3 percentage points compared with the first quarter of 2021.

Definitions and explanations

All the data in this statistical news is reported in current prices. All comparisons have been made with the corresponding quarter in 2020.

These statistics are based on data from Statistics Sweden’s Business Register database. All enterprises with at least 200 employees are included, while enterprises with between 20 and 199 employees are sampled. In some activities, enterprises with between 5 and 199 employees are sampled. Enterprises in the mining, quarrying and manufacturing industry sector with between 10 and 19 employees are taxed based on investment information from enterprises with between 20 and 49 employees.

The sectors included in this survey are SNI 05–49 (excl. 49.32), 51–53, 58, 61–63, 64.1, 65, 68 (excl. 68.204), 71–75, and 77–82 according to NACE Rev 2.
