Investments increased in the third quarter 2021

The investment rate of enterprises increased by 4 precent in the third quarter compared with the third quarter of 2020.

The outcome of the Investment Survey shows that the enterprises’ investments rose by 4 percent, equivalent to SEK 3.0 billion, in the third quarter of 2021 compared with the corresponding quarter a year ago. Total investments in the third quarter amounted to SEK 78.3 billion, which is SEK 4.8 billion, equivalent to 6 percent, less than in the second quarter of 2021.

The largest increase compared with the third quarter 0f 2020 38 percent, was noted in the information and communication industry, to an investment level of SEK 4.3 billion. The real estate industry increased its investments by SEK 1.6 billion compared with the third quarter of 2020. The transportation and storage industry decreased investments by 22 percent in the same period.

Many industries decreased investments between the second and third quarters of 2021. Investments by the information and communication industry decreased the most, declining by 38 percent. Transportation and storage decreased investments by 20 percent, to an investment level of SEK 3.6 billion. Furthermore, the industries business services, banks and insurance companies, and construction decreased their investments in the third quarter compared with the second quarter of 2021. On the other hand, the energy industry increased investments by 9 percent and the trade sector increased by 15 percent in the same period.

Total investments by the manufacturing industry

Based on the investment survey, total investments by the manufacturing industry will amount to SEK 62.2 billion in 2021 and SEK 63.3 billion in 2022. If these forecasts are realised, this will mean an increase of 2 percent in 2022 compared with 2021.

Definitions and explanations

All the data in this statistical news is reported in current prices. All comparisons have been made with the corresponding quarter in 2020.

These statistics are based on data from Statistics Sweden’s Business Register database. All enterprises with at least 200 employees are included, while enterprises with between 20 and 199 employees are sampled. In some activities, enterprises with between 5 and 199 employees are sampled. Enterprises in the mining, quarrying and manufacturing industry sector with between 10 and 19 employees are taxed based on investment information from enterprises with between 20 and 49 employees.

The sectors included in this survey are SNI 05–49 (excl. 49.32), 51–53, 58, 61–63, 64.1, 65, 68 (excl. 68.204), 71–75, and 77–82 according to NACE Rev 2.
