Enterprises invested SEK 348.2 billion in 2020

The investment rate among enterprises decreased in 2020 compared with 2019. Total investments decreased by SEK 35.7 billion, which corresponds to a decrease of 9 percent.

In 2020, total investments amounted to SEK 348.2 billion, down by 9 percent compared with 2019. The real estate sector accounted for the largest percentage of total investments in 2020, 42 percent. The industrial sector accounted for 20 percent of total investments in 2020.

The real estate sector accounted for the largest decrease in investments compared with 2019, SEK 16.9 billion, and the sector amounted to SEK 144.8 billion. In percentage terms, trade in goods industry noted the largest decrease in investments, 16 percent, compared with 2019, and amounted to SEK 17.7 billion. The business services sector also decreased more than other sectors in percentage terms. Investments made by this sector decreased by 15 percent compared with 2019, and amounted to 15.4 billion.

Enterprises invested mainly in machinery and equipment in 2020. This class of assets accounted for 49 percent of total investments, and amounted to SEK 171.7 billion. New construction, extensions and rebuilding of existing buildings accounted for 26 percent of total investments, which is a decrease of 2 percentage points compared with 2019. Total investments in new construction, extensions and rebuilding of existing buildings amounted to SEK 91 billion in 2020. Housing accounted for 17 percent of total investments, an increase of 1 percentage point compared with 2019, and amounted to SEK 58.9 billion. Purchases of buildings and facilities accounted for 8 percent of total investments and amounted to SEK 26.6 billion.

Planned investments in 2021

According to the results of the Investment Survey, planned investments are expected to amount to SEK 309.5 billion in 2021. If this forecast is accurate, investments will decrease by 11 percent compared with 2020.

Definitions and explanations

All the data in this statistical news is reported in current prices. Comparisons have been made with 2019.

These statistics are based on a sampling frame from Statistics Sweden’s Business Register database. All enterprises with at least 200 employees are included, while enterprises with between 20 and 199 employees are sampled. In some activities, enterprises with between 5 and 199 employees are sampled. Enterprises in the mining, quarrying and manufacturing industry sector with between 10 and 19 employees are estimated based on investment information from enterprises with between 20 and 49 employees.

The sectors included in this survey are B–G, NACE 49 (excl. 49.32), 51–53, 58, 61–63, 64.1, 65, 68 (excl. 68.204), 71–75, and 77–82 according to NACE Rev 2.
