Business inventories increased in the first quarter of 2022

Swedish business inventories increased by SEK 17.4 billion in constant prices in the first quarter. This development corresponds to an increase of 3.4 percent in volume.

Total inventories in industry increased by SEK 4.2 billion in the first quarter, which corresponds to an increase of 1.7 percent in volume. Inventories in trade increased by SEK 13.2 billion in the first quarter, which corresponds to an increase of 4.9 percent in volume.

Industrial inventories increased

Inventories of products in progress, finished goods and goods for resale increased by SEK 3.8 billion and inventories of raw materials and consumables increased by SEK 0.5 billion. This means that total inventories in industry increased by SEK 4.2 billion in the first quarter.

Trade inventories increased

Inventories in trade increased by SEK 13.2 billion in the first quarter. The largest increase was noted in inventories in retail trade, excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles, in which inventories increased by SEK 5.6 billion. Wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, increased by SEK 3.3 billion, while wholesale trade, excluding motor vehicles and motorcycles increased by SEK 4.3 billion.

Revisions

The figures for the first quarter 2022 are preliminary. Since the previous publication, the development in total industrial inventories in the fourth quarter 2021 has been revised upwards by SEK 0.5 billion to an increase of SEK 1.3 billion. Total trade inventories in the fourth quarter 2021 have been revised downwards by SEK 1.1 billion to an increase of SEK 1.5 billion.

As from the reference period 2021Q2, the new Business inventories survey has replaced the surveys Inventories in trade and services and Industrial inventories. The results of the new survey are comparable to the results of the old survey, since the new survey and Industrial inventories have a similar design.
