Four of ten enterprises paid to advertise on the internet

Forty-two percent of enterprises paid to advertise on the internet. Primarily enterprises operating in trade, accommodation and food services and enterprises in information and communication.

Usage is lowest among enterprises operating in transport and storage and in the construction industry. There are also regional differences: enterprises in upper Norrland used advertising the least.

Advertising based on website content most common

Among enterprises that paid for targeted advertising, the most common method, used by 26 percent, is use of technology based on the website content or keywords searched by users. Other targeted advertising methods is use of geolocation of internet users or internet users' past activities.

Definitions and explanations

The results presented here are from the survey ICT usage in enterprises in 2016. In this year's survey, 92 tables were reported that highlight access and usage of information technology and communication technology. It has been published yearly since 2001 and includes enterprises with ten employees or more among a large share of the business sector under SNI2007.The survey is part of Sweden's official statistics and is common to EU Member States. A separate simplified survey directed to enterprises with 0 to 9 employees in Sweden has been conducted yearly since 2008.
