2017 – a strong year for the business sector

The Swedish business sector continued its positive development in 2017. Enterprises’ contribution to GDP increased by 5 percent. Value added in the industry for the manufacture of beverages and tobacco products increased by 9 percent due to strong demand.

The business sector continued to develop positively in 2017. Net turnover amounted to SEK 8 546 billion, an increase of just under 7 percent, and value added amounted to SEK 2 503 billion, an increase of 5 percent. Approximately 2 872 000 persons were employed in the business sector, which is an increase of 2 percent compared with 2016. The operating margin in the business sector has been around 7 percent in the past few years.

Sales of Swedish-made goods increasing

Value added in the Swedish industry for the manufacture of beverages and tobacco products amounted to SEK 11 billion, an increase of 9 percent compared with 2016. Net turnover increased by 4 percent and the operating margin was 18.6 percent, increasing steadily in recent years. The number of employees has increased by 6 percent and just under 6 000 persons were employed in these industries in 2017.

In the industry for the manufacture of wood and products of wood and cork, value added and net turnover also increased in 2017 compared with 2016, by 11 percent and just under 9 percent, respectively. Net turnover in this industry amounted to SEK 95 billion. The operating margin increased by 1.4 percentage points to 5.3 percent.

The development in the enterprises in the industry for printing and reproduction of recorded media was slightly less positive in 2017. Value added decreased by just over 3 percent and the number of employees decreased by 6 percent. This industry is highly competitive and the number of employees and enterprises has decreased every year in recent years. However, the operating margin only decreased marginally compared with 2016.

Cooler period in the services sector

In 2017, the development in the services sector was less positive than in the rest of the business sector. Value added in the services sector increased by 3 percent, and the number of employees increased by just over 1 percent.

The corresponding change in the industrial and construction sector is an increase of just under 8 percent in value added and just over 9 percent in the number of employees. Value added and the number of employees among enterprises in the other sector have increased between 2016 and 2017, by 9 percent and just over 6 percent respectively.

Value added in the industry for veterinary activities amounted to SEK 3 billion, an increase of just under 9 percent compared with 2016, and the number of enterprises increased by just over 1 percent. In 2017, there were roughly 1 400 enterprises in this industry.

In the industry for residential care activities, both value added and net turnover decreased by 4 percent, following a number of years of positive development. Net turnover in this industry was SEK 37 billion in 2017.

In the industry for social work activities without accommodation, the number of employees decreased by 10 percent, and approximately 66 400 persons were employed in 2017. Value added decreased by 3 percent.

Structural Business Statistics is the only survey that is based on annual accounts from all non-financial enterprises in Sweden. Data is also presented by industry (according to NACE Rev.2) in the databases.

Definitions and explanations

All information is reported in current prices. All comparisons in this statistical news have been made with final data for 2016.

Net turnover: net turnover excluding excise duties and merchanting.

Employees: Average number of employees, full-time: Two half-time employees are counted as one full-time employee.

Value added: Actual production minus costs for purchased goods and services, although not salaries, payroll taxes and the costs of goods for resale (because only the trade margin for these is included in the value added).

Operating profit: Operating profit after depreciations

Operating margin: Operating profit in relation to net turnover in percent

Business sector: Enterprises conducting business activities in Sweden regardless of legal form. Businesses with financial activities and housing cooperatives are not included in the Structural Business Statistics. Public administration activities are not included either.

Industrial and construction sector: NACE 05–33 and 41–43 according to NACE Rev.2.

Services sector: NACE 45–96 (excl. 64–66 and 84) according to NACE Rev. 2.

Other sector: NACE 01–04 and 35–39 according to NACE Rev2.
