Civil society’s contribution to GDP was 3.2 percent

Total production in civil society was SEK 216 billion in 2014. This includes payments from public administration amounting to SEK 35 billion. Value added in civil society amounted to SEK 126 billion. Accordingly, the contribution of civil society to Sweden’s GDP was 3.2 percent in 2014, which was 0.1 percentage points lower than in 2013.

In 2014, civil society comprised a total of 238 000 organisations, of which 92 000 were economically active. The total number of gainfully employed persons in civil society was roughly 183 000. Women had the highest figures and comprised 59 percent. Over 71 000 persons, or 39 percent, of gainfully employed persons worked in non-profit associations.

Development and housing contributed the most to value added

A breakdown of value added by activities according to the International classification of Non-profit organisations (ICNPO) shows that Development and housing was the largest activity, with value added amounting to SEK 46 billion. The second largest activity was Religion, with value added amounting to SEK 15 billion, followed by Education and research and Culture and recreation. The activity Education and research received the most funds from public administration for its production, SEK 15 billion. Civil society also recognises subsidiaries to non-profit organisations as a subset, and these contributed value added amounting to SEK 24 billion in 2014.

The distribution of the number of economically active organisations and the number of gainfully employed persons per ICNPO shows that Development and housing was the largest activity with regard to the number of active organisations, and that Education and research was the largest activity with regard to the number of gainfully employed persons.

Development and housing includes Tenant-owners associations, which is among the reasons for the high value added and the large number of organisations in that category.

This is the second time the satellite accounts for civil society are published. The publication on civil society in 2014 gives an overall picture of civil society related to the national accounts. This publication has new content, as it also includes the number of full-time equivalents in the satellite accounts. In addition, economic data on a number of sub-activities such as Sports, Research, Income support, maintenance and material assistance, Housing and Trade unions is reported. Further information is also presented on the activities of Refugee reception in 2014 and 2015 by providers of services purchased by municipalities in civil society.
