Number of organisations in civil society increased

In 2018, there were 263 343 organisations in civil society, which is 2.2 percent more than in 2017. Since 2014, the number of organisations has increased by 10.7 percent. The largest proportion of organisations was located in development and housing, followed by recreation and culture.

Among the civil society organisations, 63.0 percent were classified as non-profit associations, which is 0.3 percentage points more than in 2017. In addition, 100 279 of the civil society organisations were economically active; this corresponds to 38.1 percent.

Total production in civil society was SEK 266.7 billion and value added amounted to SEK 154.6 billion in 2018. The civil society contribution to GDP was 3.2 percent in 2018, which is unchanged compared with 2017.

In 2018, there were 191 891 gainfully employed persons in civil society, which corresponds to 3.9 percent of the total number of employees in Sweden. Women accounted for 59.7 percent of employees in civil society, which can be compared with 47.8 percent, the total proportion of women in the labour force. There were 71 462 persons gainfully employed in non-profit associations in civil society, which corresponds to 37.2 percent.

In 2018, there were 2 336 providers of services in education, health care and social services that were purchased by municipalities and county councils in civil society. This is a drop from 2017, when there were 2 420 organisations. Civil society organisations accounted for 20.0 percent of all private providers in education, health care and social services.
