Costs for the educational system in 2011–2015:

Costs for pre-school education continued to increase

The total cost for the educational system increased by 13 percent in the period from 2011 to 2015. Costs for pre-school education increased by 20 percent over this five-year period. In the same period, the number of enrolled children increased by 5 percent. Costs for tertiary education have increased by 7 percent since 2011. The number of full-time students decreased by 6 percent in the same period. Costs for upper secondary school decreased by 2 percent, while costs for compulsory school increased by 20 percent in the same period.

Comparisons are based on constant prices.

Costs per pupil in upper secondary school have risen 14 percent

Costs per pupil in upper secondary school were SEK 114 900 in 2015, an increase of 14 percent since 2011. Costs per pupil in compulsory school have increased by SEK 9 800 in the period from 2011 to 2015 and amounted to SEK 100 900. This is an increase of 10 percent. Costs per student in tertiary education were SEK 75 900 in 2015.

Sweden in seventeenth place among OECD countries

In 2012, the OECD average education costs as a share of GDP were 6.1 percent. Among OECD countries, New Zealand had the highest share, 6.9 percent. Korea was in second place with 6.7 percent, and Sweden came in seventeenth place with 6.3 percent.
