Costs of compulsory school continued to increase

The total cost of the educational system increased by 18 percent in the period from 2014 to 2018.

The total cost of the educational system increased by 18 percent in the period from 2014 to 2018. The costs of preschool education increased by 15 percent over the five-year period. In the same period, the number of enrolled children increased by 5 percent. The costs of compulsory school increased by 28 percent, while the costs of upper secondary school increased by 14 percent in the same period. The costs of tertiary education have increased by 9 percent since 2014. The number of full-time students increased by 1 percent.

Comparisons are based on constant prices.

Costs per pupil in upper secondary school have risen by 7 percent

The cost per pupil in upper secondary school was SEK 126 000 in 2018, an increase of 7 percent from 2014. The cost per pupil in compulsory school has increased by 13 percent in the period from 2014 to 2018 and amounted to SEK 115 300. The cost per student in tertiary education was SEK 81 000 in 2018.

Sweden in fifteenth place among OECD countries

In 2018, the OECD average of expenditure on education as a share of GDP was 5.0 percent. Among OECD countries, the highest share, 6.3 percent, was in Norway. New Zealand was in second place with 6.3 percent, and Sweden was in fifteenth place with 5.3 percent. The smallest expenditure on education as a share of GDP was in Ireland, 3.5 percent.
