Percentage of pupils in remedial tuition in years 3–6 decreasing

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2016-12-06 9.30

The percentage of pupils participating in remedial tuition in year 3–6 has decreased over time. In the spring of 2016, 1 out of 10 pupils in year 5 of compulsory education took part in remedial tuition. In the spring of 1994, 2 out of 10 in year 5 participated in remedial tuition.

In the "Panel of students for longitudinal studies" survey, a sample of 10 percent of the pupils in year 3 of compulsory school is followed through years 3-9. In the spring of 2016, panel 8 was surveyed and the majority of the pupils were in year 5.

There has been a decrease in the percentage of pupils participating in remedial tuition in year 3-6 over time. Since the early 1990s, the percentage in years 3, 4 and 5 has been halved. In year 7-9, the percentage of pupils taking part in remedial tuition has remained more stable.

Chart

Among the pupils in panel 8 participating in remedial tuition in year 3, 4 and/or 5 and where we have complete information on all those years, about half of them only took part in remedial tuition in year 3 and/or 4. About 30 percent participated in remedial tuition in both year 3 and/or 4 and in year 5. About 20 percent first participated in year 5.

Proportion of pupils in remedial tuition with action plans1 has decreased

Among the pupils taking part in remedial tuition in year 5 in the spring of 2016, about 6 out of 10 pupils had an action plan to assist the pupil in reaching the educational goals. When the pupils were in year 3, in the spring of 2014, the corresponding number was 8 out of 10. Furthermore, in year 5 of 2010, in panel 7, 8 out of 10 pupils had an action plan.

Chart

Among the pupils in panel 8 with an action plan in year 3, 4 and/or 5 and where we have complete information on all those years, about half of them only had an action plan in year 3 and/or 4. About 40 percent had an action plan in both year 3 and/or 4 and in year 5. Only about 10 percent first had an action plan in year 5.

A smaller percentage of pupils participating in remedial tuition where both parents have post-secondary education.

In year 5 in the spring of 2016, the percentage of pupils participating in remedial tuition and of those having action plans were lower among pupils where both parents have post-secondary education. Among those pupils, about 5 percent of pupils where both parents have post-secondary education participated in remedial tuition, compared with 10 percent of those with one parent with post-secondary education or those where neither of the parents have post-secondary education.

Both in year 3 in the spring of 2014 and in year 4 in the spring of 2015, it was more common among boys than among girls to take part in remedial tuition. In year 5, you can still see an indication of a difference between the sexes, but it is not statistically significant. With regard to action plans, a slightly higher percentage of boys than girls have an action plan.

1 An action plan is a tool to promote opportunities for pupils to reach their goals. The action plan should provide an overall picture of the school situation of the pupil. It should describe what should be handled at individual, group and organisational level.

Half of the foreign born pupils participated in home language classes in year 5

Among the pupils in year 3 in the spring of 2014, about 10 percent were foreign born. In year 5 in the spring of 2016, about half of those pupils participated in home language classes and roughly the same percentage participated in “Swedish as second language” classes.

Among the pupils who participated in “Swedish as second language” classes, about 2 out of 10 also had action programmes. Among the pupils who did not participate in “Swedish as second language” classes, about 1 out of 10 had action programmes.

Definitions and explanations

The "Pupil panels for longitudinal studies" survey has been conducted since the early 1980s. A sample of 10 percent of the pupils in year 3 of compulsory school is followed through year 3-9. Most of the pupils were born 10 years before the first follow-up occasion. Comparable surveys have been conducted for pupils who were born in mainly 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1998 and 2004. Follow-up surveys are conducted each spring and data are collected from the schools the pupils then are at.

In the spring of 2016, panel 8 was surveyed. Panel 8 consists of a sample of 9 800 pupils who attended year 3 in the 2013/2014 school year. Since this is a sample survey, the estimations are marred by a sampling error. In the spring of 2015, the response rate was 68 percent.

Since the samples are drawn in year 3, pupils who moved to Sweden after year 3 are not included; nor are pupils included who sometime during year 3–9 were enrolled in the compulsory school for pupils with learning disabilities.
