Second quarter 2026
Greenhouse gas emissions from the Swedish economy decreased in the second quarter of 2026
Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2026-10-22 8.00
Greenhouse gas emissions from the Swedish economy amounted to 12.7 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents in the second quarter of 2026. This represents a decrease of 1.5 per cent compared with the corresponding quarter of 2025. Over the same period, GDP at constant prices increased by 3.8 per cent, resulting in a 5.1 per cent reduction in emissions intensity
The quarterly statistics from Statistics Sweden’s Environmental Accounts present preliminary production-based air emissions from the Swedish economy, including households. Production-based emissions follow the same system boundaries as the national accounts. This makes it possible, among other things, to calculate emissions intensity for different industries, that is, greenhouse gas emissions per unit of value added
Summary of developments in the second quarter of 2026
Unless otherwise stated, the figures below show the change compared with the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Greenhouse gas emissions are reported in kilotonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents.
- Total greenhouse gas emissions from the Swedish economy decreased by 1.5 per cent, corresponding to 192 kilotonnes.
- Emissions intensity, defined as greenhouse gas emissions per unit of value added for the total economy, decreased by 5.1 per cent.
- Emissions decreased in eight of the nine aggregated industries reported by SCB (see table).
- In absolute terms, the largest reduction was recorded in manufacturing, where emissions decreased by 66 kilotonnes, corresponding to 2.0 per cent.
- In percentage terms, the largest reduction was recorded in construction, where emissions decreased by 3.7 per cent, corresponding to 19 kilotonnes.
- A larger decrease was also recorded for households and non-profit institutions serving households, where emissions decreased by 35 kilotonnes, or 1.7 per cent.
- The only industry in which emissions increased was electricity, gas and heat supply; water supply, sewerage and waste management, where emissions increased by 27 kilotonnes, or 1.7 per cent.
Greenhouse gas emissions and value added for all aggregated industries are presented in the table below. The table also shows the changes compared with the corresponding quarter of the previous year, both in absolute terms and as percentages. The percentage change in greenhouse gas emissions relative to the change in value added for each aggregated industry is also presented in the chart.

Definitions and explanations
What does the quarterly statistics show?
The quarterly statistics from Statistics Sweden’s environmental accounts present preliminary production-based air emissions from the Swedish economy, including households. Greenhouse gas emissions are expressed as the sum of individual gases measured in carbon dioxide equivalents.
Production-based emissions refer to emissions generated by Swedish economic actors. The statistics include emissions from Swedish companies and individuals, both within and outside Sweden’s borders. They follow the same system boundaries as national accounts, enabling calculations such as emissions intensity (emissions per unit of value added).
For the transport sector, emissions include those generated by transport companies domiciled in Sweden, regardless of where in the world they occur. Conversely, emissions from foreign operators are excluded. For example, emissions from foreign airlines operating to, from or within Sweden are not included.
In accordance with the Climate Convention, biogenic CO₂ emissions from the combustion of biofuels are reported separately from fossil CO₂ emissions. In the statistics on total greenhouse gas emissions from the Swedish economy, these biogenic emissions are excluded. This is because harvesting of biomass is accounted for in the land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector in Sweden’s international reporting. Including both would result in double counting; therefore, biogenic emissions are presented as a separate category.
When comparing quarters, users should be aware of seasonal variation. For example, emissions from electricity, gas and district heating, water, sewerage and waste are higher during colder months, whereas household consumption of diesel and petrol is higher during warmer months.
Greenhouse gases in CO₂ equivalents are calculated as an aggregate of CO₂ (fossil), CH₄, N₂O, HFCs, PFCs and SF₆, using Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors consistent with reporting under the UNFCCC[1].

Revisions
For air transport emissions, the OECD has not updated the statistics used to estimate these emissions. Pending the resumption of publication, data for the corresponding quarter of the previous year have been reused.
For maritime transport emissions, starting with this publication, estimates are based on source data from the OECD, which compiles information on vessel movements collected through Automatic Identification System (AIS) transponders.
