According to Statistics Sweden's calculations, there are 1 173 holiday home areas in Sweden. Together, they represent 0.15 percent of Sweden's land area. The largest area of holiday home areas is in Stockholm County, where they represent nearly 3 percent of the county's land area. Stockholm County also has the largest number of holiday home areas, 287 areas, in Sweden.

Holiday home areas overlapped by localities

In several counties, holiday home areas are overlapped by localities. On average, 45 percent of holiday home areas’ area is overlapped by localities.

Since Statistics Sweden's holiday home areas can overlap localities, the areas consist of both holiday homes and permanent dwellings. Holiday homes are one- or two-dwelling buildings with no registered population. On average, 63 percent of the areas' buildings are holiday homes.

Definitions and explanations

The holiday home areas included in the statistics are defined in brief as continuous settlement with at least 50 buildings classified as holiday homes. Holiday homes are defined as one- or two-dwelling buildings with no registered population on 31 December 2015.
