Borrowing in securities decreased

Statistical news from Statistics Sweden 2018-11-19 9.30

Total Swedish liability in debt securities amounted to SEK 7 644 billion at the end of October. This is a decrease of SEK 424 billion compared with the previous month. The decrease occurred mainly in debt securities denominated in foreign currency valued at SEK 445 billion.

The value of liabilities in debt securities denominated in foreign currency decreased by a total value of SEK 517 billion compared with August. This decrease is mainly due to securities denominated in euros and US dollars, which decreased by SEK 251 billion and SEK 197 billion respectively, compared with August.

Long-term liability in debt securities decreased by SEK 471 billion in October, to SEK 6 412 billion in total. This change was effected by a decrease of SEK 230 billion in securities denominated in euros and a decrease of SEK 138 billion in securities denominated in US dollars. The decrease in long-term securities denominated in euros and US dollars was mainly caused by a decrease in long-term securities in the bank sector.

Borrowing in the bank sector continued to decrease

The total debt stock in the bank sector decreased by SEK 473 billion to SEK 1 885 billion in total in October. The decrease of the long-term debt in foreign currency amounted to SEK 416 billion. Main underlying causes of this decrease include securities denominated in euros and US dollars valued at SEK 350 billion in total. Short-term securities decreased by SEK 13 billion.

Borrowing in the municipal sector, central government, other monetary financial institutions and the housing sector increased by SEK 67 billion in total compared with the previous month. The non-financial and other financial sector decreased by SEK 19 billion compared with the previous month.

Maturity structure

In November, securities valued at SEK 674 billion will reach maturity, of which SEK 151 billion is denominated in foreign currency. Over the next 3 months, SEK 1 145 billion, corresponding to 15 percent of the total outstanding liability in debt securities, will reach maturity.

Note: During October 2018 a company in the banking sector left the population. A foreign branch was added.
