Slightly decreased borrowing in debt securities

At the end of February, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 656 billion. This is a decrease of SEK 80 billion since January, mainly due to the fact that the liabilities in dollar-denominated securities has fallen during the month.

Developments in February 2024 in brief

Liabilities decreased in money market instruments and increased in bonds during the month

  • At the end of February, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 656 billion, of which bonds accounted for 78 percent and money market instruments accounted for 22 percent.
  • During the month, liabilities increased in bonds by SEK 41 billion decreased in money markets instruments by SEK 120 billion.
  • The liabilities decreased in both securities denominated in Swedish kronor and in foreign currency by SEK 12 billion and SEK 68 billion respectively.
  • The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was 0.6 percent in February, up by 3.8 percentage points compared with January.

Swedish Government and The Swedish Riksbank decreased their liabilities during February

  • In February, Swedish Government (throught the Swedish National Debt Office) accounted for the largest decrease in liabiliteies in debt securities, where the liabilities decreased by SEK 82 billion in total. The decrease was primarily due to maturity of money market instruments denominated in dollars.
  • Also The Swedish Riksbank decreased their liabilities in debt securities, by a total of SEK 61 billion.
  • Monetary financial institutions on the other hand incread their liabilities in debt securities by a total of SEK 71 billion.

Maturity structure

  • Debt securities valued at SEK 1 624 billion will reach maturity within six months excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank. Around 73 percent of these are denominated in foreign currency, mainly US dollars and euros.
  • Debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for nearly 70 percent of the total maturity value within six months (excluding certificates issued by Sveriges Riksbank), SEK 1 147 billion, in which the majority is issued in foreign currency.
