Increased borrowing in debt securities

At the end of May, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 863 billion, up by SEK 211 billion from April. This increase is mainly due to increased borrowing in bonds during the month.

Development in April 2023 in brief

Increased liabilities in both money market instruments and bonds

  • At the end of May, total liabilities in debt securities amounted to SEK 9 863 billion, of which bonds accounted for 76 percent and money market instruments accounted for 24 percent.
  • During the month, liabilities in both money markets instruments and bonds increased by SEK 25 billion and SEK 186 billion respectively.
  • The liabilities denominated in Swedish Crowns increased by a total of SEK 16 billion during the month and liabilities denominated in foreign currencies increased by SEK 195 billion.
  • The annual growth rate for total debt securities liabilities was 10.4 percent, up by 2.8 percentage points compared to April.

Increased borrowing for Monetary financial institutions

  • In May, monetary financial institutions accounted for the largest increase in liabiliteies in debt securities, increased by SEK 199 billion in total. The increase in covered bonds was SEK 28 billion and in non-covered securities SEK 171 billion.
  • Non-financial corporations also increased their liabilities by SEK 35 billion during the month.
  • The central government (through the Swedish National Debt Office) and the Swedish Riksbank on the other hand decreased their liabilities, by SEK 30 billion and SEK 11 billion respectively.

Maturity structure

  • Debt securities valued at SEK 2 842 billion will reach maturity within six months. Almost half of these are denominated in foreign currency, mainly US dollars and euros.
  • Debt securities from monetary financial institutions accounted for almost half of the total maturity value within six months, SEK 1 374 billion, in which the majority is issued in foreign currency.
