The first half of 2025 was characterised by significant uncertainty and high volatility in the stock market. Despite this, a slight increase in the total share assets was noted during the period.
Development during the first half of 2025 in brief
- In total, the wealth of shares listed on Swedish marketplaces increased by 0.7 percent in the first half of 2025 and amounted to SEK 11,649 billion at the end of June 2025.
- Women invest a relatively larger share of their share wealth in companies that are on the Large Cap list, compared to men.
- The foreign sector continues to be the largest ownership sector in the Swedish marketplace.
During the first half of the year, the share assets of companies listed on the Swedish marketplace increased by SEK 82 billion, which corresponds to an increase of 0.7 percent. During the same period, the OMX Affärsvärlden general index fell by 0.2 percent.
Different investment patterns between women and men
At the end of the first half of 2025, households' total share wealth amounted to SEK 1,395 billion, which means an increase of SEK 48 billion during the first six months of the year. Of the households' total equity assets, 31 percent were owned by women, while men accounted for the remaining 69 percent. Investment patterns differ between women and men, which is evident in their choice of stock lists. Women have a relatively larger ownership stake in large cap companies compared to men, which indicates a tendency to prioritize large and established companies. Men, on the other hand, have a relatively larger share of ownership on other share lists. The most prominent difference is found in the Spotlight Stock Market, where women own 11 percent while men account for the remaining 89 percent.
Foreign countries remain the largest ownership sector
At the end of June 2025, the foreign sector constituted the largest holding sector on the Swedish stock market, with a total shareholding of SEK 4,260 billion. This corresponds to 37 percent of the total market value of companies listed on a Swedish marketplace. Swedish financial corporations constituted the second largest ownership sector with a share of 32 percent, with investment funds and investment companies accounting for the largest share of ownership in this ownership sector.
Definitions and explanations
Information on final owners is not available for nominee-registered ownership through Swedish nominees if the holding is less than 501 shares in a company. Because of this, these holdings are not included when households’ shareholdings are broken down by income and age. To address this, the difference between the number of shares issued and the number of securities with a known final-owner is distributed between the household sector and non-profit institutions serving households. At the end of june 2025, the imputed share in the household sector amounted to 13 percent of the total market value.
Information foreign managers end customers is not available, as these are not included in the public register of shareholders.
Swedish marketplaces refer to OMX Stockholm, Spotlight Stock Market, NGM and First North. Unlisted classes of shares in listed companies are also included. Shares in foreign companies listed on the aforementioned marketplaces are included in the statistics from the year 2000 onwards.
